David Benavides, KidWorks’ Chief Executive Officer, says F&M Bank’s partnership with KidWorks supports every part of our mission, vision, strategies and programs.

“KidWorks partnership with F&M Bank began in 2018 when local Santa Ana businessman and friend of KidWorks, Mike Harrah, introduced us to Henry Walker, F&M Bank’s Chief Executive Officer.”  

David adds, “With many shared values, including living out our faith by serving others, Mr. Walker and the bank soon became friends and supporters of KidWorks. Our partnership has been growing over the many years.

“You’ll find people like Dan, Karen and bank staff at KidWorks volunteering at our Read Across America annual literacy event, our youth Thanksgiving feast, our after-school and summer programs and much more,” David says.

He adds, “Karen attended KidWorks programs throughout her elementary school years. She’s an example of the way we walk alongside our students from preschool to college and beyond towards meaningful careers.”

Cheryl Anderson, our Senior Grants Manager, says F&M’s financial support has been deeply appreciated as we welcome more students and operate four locations within Santa Ana.

“F&M’s financial gifts go such a long way towards allowing us to fund programs as wide ranging as our preschool to youth events,” Cheryl says. “The level of their generosity is remarkable.”

We’d like to share more about Dan and Karen and their heart for KidWorks and those we serve.

Dan Biedscheid, Vice President & Branch Manager

Dan’s support of KidWorks began in 2024 when he was named branch manager of the bank’s Santa Ana office at 17^th Street and Cabrillo Park Drive.

That branch has been serving the community for 40 years.

“One of the bank’s founding principles of ‘Service Above Self’ is aligned with my personal values, including my faith,” Dan says. “It’s one of the reasons I chose to work at F&M.”

He adds, “My favorite part of volunteering at KidWorks is when the younger kids are full of wonderful questions like, ‘How are you so tall?’  ‘How much money do you keep at the bank?’ and  ‘How old are you?’”

Dan and his team regularly volunteer at KidWorks events and enjoy the positive energy that participating brings. “My hopes and expectations are for my team and I to continue volunteering where needed to help KidWorks continue to further its mission,” he says.

Dan sees the strong partnership between the bank and KidWorks continuing long into the future:

“I see the positive energy from the students and staff. It’s uplifting to be a part of something so impactful. KidWorks lets me know that I am contributing to our community in meaningful ways.”

While attending KidWorks during her elementary school years, Karen made sure to have the full KidWorks’ experience.

“I enrolled in the after-school programs and summer sessions,” Karen says. “I really enjoyed the computer lab; it was my first exposure to this technology. I also had so much fun at the Christmas celebrations.”

Growing up in the Townsend Street neighborhood of Santa Ana also had its challenges.

“Townsend is home to many families that are just getting by on the margins,” Karen says. “There is love in these homes but the resources are scarce. I remember playing with the neighborhood kids and continue to keep in touch with some of those neighbors.”

Motivated by her time at KidWorks, Karen graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2018, earning a political science degree.

Karen has worked at F&M for four years. In her role, she coordinates and supports the bank’s community outreach efforts, including grant making programs, employee volunteer events and financial education partnerships.

In 2025, Karen hosted KidWorks’ Leadership students for a tour and financial literacy workshop at F&M Bank’s first original bank building in downtown Long Beach.

This year marks the 20^th anniversary since our state-licensed preschool first opened its doors to our youngest scholars. We feel incredible joy at having reached this remarkable milestone—and mostly we feel pride in the students, parents, staff, volunteers and partners who’ve made it all possible.

Over two decades, we estimate that well over 800 children ages three to four-years-old have learned to write their names, count most of the way up to 20, identified the colors of the rainbow and much more.

They’ve also learned vital life skills, including socializing with others, staying on task and taking on leadership roles (remember the pride you felt when your teacher picked you turn the page on the classroom calendar?).

The preschool operates two sessions each weekday, welcoming up to 48 students total in a morning and afternoon session.

Idalia Galdamez, our Preschool Director since 2009, has witnessed all the emotions that children entering a classroom for the first time experience: laughter, the joy of making new friends, the feeling of accomplishment writing their name for the first time—and even a few tears when that milk cup suddenly tips over “on its own.”

“Our children love to attend our program and their daily attendance, measured quarterly, attests to that,” Idalia says. “For the first quarter 2026, we had 91% attendance and similar attendance during prior quarters. This is in despite of—or perhaps as a result of—economic and other factors that have put increased burdens on the families KidWorks’ serves.

Here are just a few of what the parents of our students recently shared:

“I heard so many good recommendations about the preschool from a lot of parents,” says Jordania Macedo. “The staff prioritized an authentic relationship with me and my child, Jordania. She has learned self-regulation, communication, waiting her turn and staying focused. Jordania is also becoming confident about navigating the world outside our home and how to develop friendships and confidence through play.”

“My son, Caleb, always looks forward to coming to the preschool,” says Oscar Pavia. “There is so much caring and a lot of communication.”

Stephanie Portillo says of her son, Enzo: “He’s become much more confident in interacting with others. Emotionally, he’s more adept at expressing his feelings. He comes home so excited to share what he’s learned.”

“My daughter, Jayleen, has really grown academically at the preschool,” says Maria Isidoro. “She’s especially grown socially since she used to not play with other children. KidWorks is very welcoming and always willing to lend a helping hand.”

All of mom Michelle Ravelo’s nieces and nephews have attended KidWorks, so she knew it was a place ideally suited for her son, Emiliano, when he was eligible to enroll in preschool.

“Because of the preschool, Emiliano is much more social,” Michelle says. “He speaks more often and uses sentences. At preschool, he is with other children his age. The KidWorks’ preschool staff is so welcoming and informative.”

Aurora Oregel says her son, Leonardo, is also thriving at our preschool.

“The staff cares about my child and his development,” she says. “They offer workshops on a variety of topics and encourage parents to participate and volunteer.”

One of the joys of being part of the talented KidWorks’ preschool staff is to see how young minds process the world where so much is new to them.

Alma Magaña, our Early Learning/Family Specialist (and one of KidWorks longest serving staff members), delights in a story a preschooler was very anxious to share with her:

“One of so many unforgettable conversations over the years began one September and continued for months. A student told me, ‘Teacher, Cuca ran away with her boyfriend.’

“I replied, ‘Really?’ and she said, ‘Yes, my mom told me.’ A few weeks later, she said, ‘Teacher, Cuca is back home and my mom said she might be pregnant.’

“Again, I asked, ‘Really? She came back?’ and she said ‘yes.’

“Months later, she told me, ‘Teacher, Cuca had her baby.’ By then, I was emotionally connected to the story.

“Then, months later, the same story repeats once again—Cuca ran away with her boyfriend and got pregnant again. But this time, the conversation ended with, ‘Teacher, Cuca gave birth to her kittens.’

“She sounded so serious and concerned before I realized we were talking about a cat, that I had spent all that time thinking Cuca was a person. I’d even started looking for resources for this young mom.”

Alma’s heart to help a young mom typifies how the KidWorks’ preschool team always looks for ways to go above and beyond.

The preschool itself is also “above and beyond” what might be found elsewhere.

For example, in 2024, KidWorks opened a new outdoor classroom, adjacent to the indoor one.

At the time, Idalia said:

“The outdoor classroom is intentionally designed with preschoolers in mind. It facilitates physical and mental health, along with promoting the academic skills that develop at this age,” she says. “Children explore building, creating and problem-solving.

“There’s also what we call a ‘messy materials’ station where students can work with loose parts. A stage is available for music and movement, along with a sensory area for water and sand play. Other elements of the outdoor classroom feature a nature appreciation zone (students can plant bushes and trees), art areas and places to gather with friends.

“Paths for bikes, tricycles and pull wagons will also promote physical activity.”

Our preschoolers also enjoy three fields trips per semester, more than the usual one such trip at most preschools. Idalia thanks JFK Transportation, a longtime KidWorks supporter, for donating their time and resources.

She also thanks Carrazco Law for underwriting a yearly field trip for entire families, including the Día del Niño celebration.

That joyful sound is one we invite you to celebrate as the preschool class of 2026 gathers for a graduation ceremony on June 12 and prepares for the next step in their academic journey.

Sophia Catalan, 17-years-old, and Leyla Navarro, 18-years-old, first became friends when Sophia enrolled in our kindergarten program and Leyla enrolled in our state-licensed preschool.

Today, the two are so close they could be considered sisters.

Both are graduating high school this spring, Sophia from Godinez Fundamental High School and Leyla from Mater Dei High School.

They share something else in common that’s so inspiring: Sophia and Leyla are both young leaders, molded by their years at KidWorks and their deep desire to serve others in the Santa Ana community.

KidWorks is honored to share each of their stories.

Before we do that, both young women asked for the opportunity to thank two of KidWorks leaders for the strong positive influences they’ve had on their lives going back to their younger years.

Jacky Hernandez, Site Supervisor, Dan Donahue Center

“Jacky and I can talk about literally anything–school, life, whatever is on my mind,” Sophia says. “She was my KidWorks’ teacher in first, second, third and eighth grade when I was in elementary and middle school.

“Jacky is the person who inspired me to become a leader and join the youth programs. We laugh together all the time.”

Maria Ruvalcaba, Youth Leadership Development Coordinator

“I met Maria a few years ago at KidWorks’ summer camp in Yosemite and we’ve grown really close,” Leyla says. “She was the one who introduced me to the organization’s Youth Community Leaders (YCL) service group (formerly known as the Youth Leadership Team).

“She’s given me rides from home to KidWorks and back again. I’m so busy between school and KidWorks and she always tells me, ‘Leyla, keep going; it will all be worth it in the end.’”

Sophia Catalan

When she was ready for kindergarten, Sophia saw how much her two older twin sisters loved KidWorks and asked her parents to enroll her.

(Both sisters are now 27 years old. Kaely is currently attending university and pursuing a degree in communications. Leslie is an after-school programs teacher at a Santa Ana high school.)

“Sophia is a natural-born leader,” Maria says. “She is friendly and kind, with a bubbly personality and gentle heart.”

Adds Maria, “Sophia demonstrates leadership by proactively seeking ways to help wherever it’s needed. She never has to be asked twice when there is a task to be done and usually takes the initiative before I or the KidWorks staff even ask.”

Sophia will attend Chapman University this spring, majoring in business administration with an emphasis on accounting.

“My goal is to earn my master’s degree and work as an accountant at a big firm,” she says.

Since we first opened our doors in 1993, KidWorks has focused on developing tomorrow’s leaders who will be ready to enter the work world with the full range of skills needed by employers.

Part of that process is providing students like Sophia and Leyla with opportunities to hone their abilities as leaders.

Sophia and Leyla have pursued those opportunities with enthusiasm.

For Sophia that has included a wide variety of volunteering at Godinez: Key Club, Girls League, Vietnamese Student Association, Associated Student Body secretary and more.

Since sixth grade she has been very active in our Youth Community Leaders (YCL) group.

“We’ve done beach and park clean-ups, helped at food pantries, and visited nursing homes, plus many other community projects,” Sophia says.

She says she was particularly moved by the visits to the nursing home and the chance to interact with the residents there.

“We played bingo with them, talked about their lifetime memories and shared smiles and laughs,” Sophia says. “One older woman said to me, ‘You are all so amazing; not everyone comes to visit us.’”

She says serving in leadership positions has been key to her growth.

“I’ve become more confident as a public speaker, learning to manage multiple projects at the same time and how to develop plans and agendas,” Sophia says.

Leyla Navarro

As a child, Leyla and her family lived for several years in a small, white house on Daisy Avenue right across the street from our Dan Donahue Center.

“My parents, Miguel and Victoria, signed me up for preschool and I’ve been going to KidWorks ever since,” Leyla says.

“Preschool is one of my favorite memories,” she says. “Alma Magaña (our Early Learning/Family Specialist) got me excited about doing homework, enjoying a snack with the other students and brushing my teeth. It still brings me peace today remembering how patient and kind Alma is.”

“Leyla is beautiful inside and out,” Maria says. “She is kind-hearted, gentle and a natural-born leader, just like her friend, Sophia.”

Maria says that Leyla exhibits all the attributes found in a true leader.

“She always says yes to any opportunity to serve that comes her way and is not intimidated in the least by the challenges she faces. She makes it a priority to care for others.”

That’s why it’s not surprising that Leyla has her sights set on becoming a Physician Assistant or an OB/GYN specializing in women’s health. To reach that goal, she’ll attend California Baptist University in the fall, majoring in medical science.

Leyla is a person of deep faith in Jesus and attends church with Ms. Jacky.

“Christ is the center of my life,” she says.

Leyla is very active in leadership activities and in serving, both at KidWorks and at Mater Dei.

With a deep love of music (she plays the alto saxophone), she is a member of the school’s symphonic, jazz, pep and marching bands.

At KidWorks, Leyla is active in these KidWorks’ programs:

• Youth Community Leaders (YCL) she’s collaborated with her team to plan multiple service projects in her community and she’s spoken with Santa Ana city representatives to help shape new and safe parks for her neighborhood.
• Ignite youth leadership program “We lead Character Soccer classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and hold team-building meetings,” Leyla says. “We also facilitate conversations with participants regarding character values like respect, integrity and accountability. We also learn future job skills.”
• After-school volunteer tutor for fifth graders.
• Unity Council “We plan events for our peers, such as youth nights, the Thanksgiving feast and youth lock-in, a night of fun, food, faith and fellowship,” Leyla says.

Leyla is also an entrepreneur. Her love of baking banana bread prompted her recent launch of Leyla’s Bakery, where the offerings include traditional banana bread, along with pecan, chocolate and cholate-pecan options.

We are so proud of Sophia and Leyla, along with dozens of other KidWorks’ youths whose servants hearts are uplifting their community each day.

Announcing KidWorks’ Two Main Growth Strategies for 2026 & Beyond

Do you remember your first day of school, perhaps in first or second grade? If you’re like me, there was excitement about meeting your new teacher, seeing who your classmates would be, and maybe even a little apprehension about whether the homework would be too hard.

I felt that same exhilaration on a cool fall day this past October, when dozens of friends, neighbors, partners, and supporters gathered to celebrate the reopening of our Bishop Manor spoke center, located in an underserved and vulnerable neighborhood in central Santa Ana.

The reopening was cause for joy. It also marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for KidWorks and the launch of our 2026 vision for growth. As we begin the new year, I’d like to share the two primary strategies that will guide our expansion in 2026 and beyond.

Growth Strategy #1: Expanding Our Network of Spoke Centers

Our first strategy is to serve more students, from preschool through post-secondary success, by establishing additional spoke centers in strategically selected neighborhoods with the greatest need. This approach builds on our proven Dan Donahue Center hub model and our three existing spoke centers.

Over the next four to five years, our goal is to open two additional spoke centers, deepening our presence where students and families need us most.

Expanding our spoke centers allows us to:

• Serve as a gathering space for community partners to collaborate on neighborhood transformation.
• Be deeply rooted in the life and culture of the neighborhoods we serve;
• Build trusted relationships that lead to sustainable impact and generational change;
• Provide safe, welcoming spaces for students to learn and grow; and grow; and
• Serve as a gathering space for community partners to collaborate on neighborhood transformation.

Growth Strategy #2: Strengthening College & Career Success

Our second growth strategy focuses on strengthening and expanding our college and career success programming—preparing more young people to become competent, confident, and career-ready adults.

Key enhancements include:

• Additional support for our Transfer Program, which assists students who begin at community college and later transfer to four-year universities;
• A more robust Mentor Program; and
• Expanded workforce readiness programming that equips students with practical skills and a strong work ethic valued by employers.

Many of our students are the first in their families to pursue higher education. Over the years, alumni have gone on to successful careers in healthcare, engineering, law, industrial trades, the military, and more. These enhancements will allow us to multiply that impact.

College student Brianna Lopez knows what it’s like to suddenly be forced to put one’s dreams on hold.

Earlier this year, she was accepted to attend the University of California, Riverside. Brianna was ready to begin her studies. She would be the first in her family to pursue a college/university degree—setting her sights on earning a master’s degree in psychology.

Then the unexpected happened.

Her family was hit by a financial crisis and other hardships.

Even with her exceptional academic record in high school, the cost of a university education became too much for her family and her to absorb. Brianna made the difficult personal decision to withdraw from the university and continue her education at a more affordable level at Cypress College.

Brianna credits KidWorks and our college preparedness programs for continuing to help her navigate the unexpected.

Yet, Brianna’s KidWorks’ story didn’t only begin in high school when the possibility of attending a university was just a few years away.

As a youngster, she enrolled in our state-licensed preschool, then attended KidWorks all the way through high school graduation.

Approximately 40 percent of our high school seniors who first enroll in KidWorks’ preschool continue with us through 12^th grade and graduate on time from high school. Most also go on to colleges/universities or a trade school. That’s been part of our success story since we first opened our doors over 31 years ago.

During Brianna’s time at KidWorks, she benefitted from programs that include after-school tutoring, music appreciation, spring and summer events, youth leadership development and college preparedness activities, to name a few.

“Brianna has grown into an incredible young woman through our personal development, leadership, faith and academic programs,” says Clarisa Vargas, KidWorks’ College & Career Director.

Clarisa adds, “When Brianna made the difficult decision to leave UC Riverside, she made the most out of her situation by attending Cypress College and playing basketball.

“Brianna was a star basketball player at Godinez High School and was scouted by one of the coaches at Cypress College during her senior year but decided attending a university was the right choice at the time.”

The Cypress College basketball coach respected Brianna’s decision and warmly welcomed her back to the team when she re-enrolled in the college.

She’ll return to UC Riverside in the right timing; for now, she’s doing wonderfully both academically and athletically.

She adds, “KidWorks also helped me to develop my social skills, getting me out of my comfort zone and teaching me how to confidently speak in front of people.”

All of these life skills will power Brianna to pursue the big dreams and goals she’s set for herself: “I plan on earning my master’s degree, with a career as a sports psychologist or counselor for high school youth.”

Clarisa sees resolve and tenacity in Brianna.

“Brianna is very easy-going and has an incredible work ethic and sense of self,” Clarisa says. “She’s strongly motivated to chase her dreams and achieve them.”

Clarisa adds, “Through all the twists and turns of life, Brianna has the ability to have fun, be a leader and show self-growth and awareness. She’s had to make tough decisions in her life and does so with such remarkable grace.”

KidWorks is welcoming up to 60 students in grades kindergarten through 12^th grades as we celebrate the reopening of our Bishop Manor spoke center, located at 1001 E. Bishop St. in central Santa Ana.

“The reopening of Bishop Manor is a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to serve even more students and families since we first opened our doors in a small, one bedroom apartment 32 years ago,” says David Benavides, KidWorks’ Chief Executive Officer.

He adds, “This is the perfect time to reopen Bishop Manor; the needs of this underserved but vibrant community are clear. We are confident we will make a meaningful and sustained positive impact.”

David explains, “While our main campus/hub, the Dan Donahue Center, is a strong presence in the community, our goal is to serve more youth and expand by opening new spoke centers in additional neighborhoods. The reopening of Bishop Manor supports that intent.”

The thinking behind this long-term goal is four-fold:

• Be deeply rooted in the life and culture of our neighborhoods.
• Create trusted relationships, resulting in sustainable impact and generational change.
• Provide a safe haven for students.
• Serve as a gathering space for community partners to collaborate on neighborhood change.

Bishop Manor first opened in 2012 but was forced to close in 2020 due to water damage and the impact of the COVID pandemic.

Emily recently started her term as chair of our board of directors.

Emily has been the driving force behind all parts of the project to ready Bishop Manor for last month’s grand reopening.

“Emily has been a faithful partner for over 14 years and a shining example of servant leadership,” says Lisa Gels, our Director of Philanthropy.

This generous supporter’s impact has been felt in countless ways: wrapping donated gifts for our annual Christmas store where parents can purchase new items for family and loved ones at next to no cost, supporting the KidWorks women’s committee, inspiring high school seniors at career days and sparking generosity by offering matching year-end gifts. In 2024, she spearheaded the launch of “Cars & Cocktails: Funding a Foundation for Success,” which continues in 2025.

“When she learned about the opportunity to reopen Bishop Manor, she not only volunteered her time but also mobilized her network of trusted contractors to donate materials and volunteer their time—turning a construction project into a community movement for our students,” Lisa says. “Her leadership transformed Bishop Manor into a space where students can learn, dream and thrive for years to come.”

Adds Lisa, “With ECM’s reputation for delivering expert industrial land development projects with precision and accountability, Emily has ensured that every phase of the renovation is managed with the highest level of care.

“She also has rallied her network of trusted contractors to donate materials and volunteer their time.”

By sharing her expertise, network and heart for KidWorks’ students, Emily is helping first-generation college students pursue their dreams of college and career success. Bishop Manor will help develop the next generation of young leaders because she chose to lead by example.

Highlights from the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of KidWorks Bishop Manor

With great joy and anticipation, KidWorks announces the upcoming reopening in October of our Bishop Manor spoke center in central Santa Ana.

The center expands KidWorks’ community presence through our existing main Dan Donahue Center, along with the Cedar Evergreen and Townsend Street spoke centers.

KidWorks Bishop Manor (KBM) first opened in 2012 but was forced to close in 2020 during the COVID pandemic and due to water damage during this same time period.

Now, it’s ready to open soon as a fully remodeled and repaired spoke center, available to welcome up to 60 students in grades kindergarten through 12^th grade.

“What’s so uplifting about Bishop Manor is the way neighbors and the community jumped in with 100 percent effort in their desire for us to reopen,” says David Benavides, KidWorks’ Chief Executive Officer.

He adds, “Moreover, we are deeply grateful to our partners and supporters who provided time, talent funds and resources to bring this dream to fruition. We especially thank Emily Mandrup, founder of ECM Management.”

KBM undergoes major renovations, including an expanded clubhouse, up-to-date classroom technology, and repaired community pool

“So many neighbors in the community near Bishop Manor were part of making the reopening possible,” says Salma De Loera, our Family & Community Engagement Program Associate.

Their volunteer efforts included:

• Offering valuable ideas during planning meetings about programs and activities that would maximize the value for students who attend in the areas of academics, spiritual growth, leadership and more.
• Donating supplies.
• Providing refreshments and serving food to workers.
• Getting word out to the community about the opportunity to enroll students in the center.
• Helping resolve issues with technology that occasionally cropped up.

“The community’s generosity and willingness to be part of this process reminds us of how much we can accomplish together,” Salma says.

KidWorks thanks all the neighbors who lent a hand, including:

Maria C., one of the neighbors noted above, says, “I really value what KidWorks does for our families, so helping was a way of showing support by donating food and getting word out about the new center to my neighbors.

She adds, “I’m always referring parents to KidWorks. One of the biggest needs in our community is a safe place for kids to go after school. With KidWorks, parents can feel peace of mind knowing their children are safe, supervised and doing something positive that prepares them for the future.”

KidWorks hosted two community events during the summer to connect with families and celebrate the coming launch of KBM

Luis L. also listed above and a member of the Bishop Manor Homeowners Association, is another strong KidWorks supporter and gets word out about our program to community members. He’s helped in other valuable ways as the Bishop Manor project moved forward.

“I plan to enroll my children in Bishop Manor and encourage others to do so as well,” Luis says. “I’m grateful that KidWorks is returning to our community, providing valuable support in the areas of homework and other engaging activities. Their presence in the neighborhood will greatly benefit families in the neighborhood.”

“The parents and community have a true desire to see their community thrive,” says Sonia Rios-Guzman, our Family & Community Engagement Manager. “This neighborhood action team worked together to accomplish a better future for the families that live in the Bishop Manor community.”

Sonia adds, “Their strength, leadership and passion for a healthy and safe community defines and drives this extraordinary group of caring neighbors.”

Eva Ochoa is the site supervisor for Bishop Manor.

“Eva is the perfect choice to lead this spoke center,” says Gerardo Magaña, our Senior Director of Programs. “She was a student at Bishop Manor starting in her elementary school years and has taken a similar journey as the students she will lead and inspire.”

“I’m super excited to return to the same community where I grew up and to be a leader who demonstrates that everyone is able to accomplish a dream,” Eva says. “My KidWorks’ experience helped me with my personal and academic growth, reinforcing positive qualities and guiding me to promote spiritual well-being.”

Eva graduated from Grand Canyon University, earning a bachelor’s degree in educational studies. She previously worked for the Santa Ana Unified School District as a teacher’s assistant.

Brizzy Cruz served as site supervisor for Bishop Manor from 2015 to 2019 and is now site supervisor for our Cedar Evergreen spoke center. She is delighted to see Bishop Manor reopen.

“My dream is that the center becomes a hub of opportunity and pride, where students discover their potential and families feel supported and connected,” Brizzy says.

KidWorks Bishop Manor’s Grand Opening is set for Thursday, October 30th at 5:00—7:00pm and is dedicated to the families in the community who have patiently awaited the return of KidWorks. This event is a celebration of their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in reopening KidWorks at Bishop Manor. It will also be an evening of celebration, with raffles and fun games for all ages to enjoy.

Last April, college student and KidWorks’ alum Jared Pacheco experienced the passing of a close friend. The loss hit him hard.

Yet, he knew who to turn to for compassion and understanding: Mike Torrey, his KidWorks’ mentor.

“Mike was able to help me grieve and he shared words of encouragement,” Jared says. “He was there for me when it mattered most.”

Mike, a professional architectural photographer, became Jared’s mentor in December 2024 and this mentorship commitment continues through August 2026 with once-a-month meetings at KidWorks (although he and Jared are encouraged to remain in touch as long as they’d like after the official mentorship concludes).

Mike’s engagement with KidWorks is a true family affair. His wife, Valerie, a recently retired education leader, began as a mentor for longtime KidWorks student, Ashley Torres, who begins attending Concordia University in Irvine this fall.

The Torrey family have been dedicated KidWorks’ partners, supporting our fundraising events, providing Thanksgiving care packages for the families we support and serving on key committees.

“Mike is easy going and very uplifting,” Jared says. “We talk easily about a lot of topics and he’s always there for me. Mike is very encouraging and his words have great meaning to me. It’s nice to have someone like him in my life to provide wisdom and advice.”

Jared adds, “Mike has helped me by always being at every mentor meeting and fully showing up for me. He cares about me as a person and guides me when I’m making decisions. It’s great to know I always have someone like him to rely on.”

For his part, Mike is no stranger to being a positive youth role model, having previously volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

“Jared has a wonderful spirit about him and we’re just getting to know each other better,” Mike says. “He’s pursuing more clarity about his education and life goals, yet there is something remarkable in him that will emerge over time. I’m here to help in any way I can to facilitate and encourage him to discover his talents and purpose.”

Jared is already hard at work getting himself set for a meaningful and productive life and career.

“I have my sights set on a career in criminal justice, possibly as a probation officer or probation social worker,” he says.

We are so grateful to Mike, Valerie and all of our KidWorks mentors,” says Clarisa Vargas, our College & Career Director. “The life experiences and wisdom that adults bring to our youth are such a strong and foundational building block at KidWorks.”

“There are so many rewards that come from being a mentor,” says Leslie Martinez, our College & Career Coordinator. “These include being in a youth’s corner like someone was once for you. Mentoring is really about being another positive and influential person in these youths’ lives as they get ready to encounter life after high school.”

Mike says the mentor program paves the way for a great experience for mentor and mentee:

“It’s really well organized and each mentor’s responsibilities are clearly defined,” Mike says. “I’m impressed with the content and the great staff, plus how other mentors and mentees share their experiences.”

Thank you, Mike and Valerie, for walking alongside our students in ways that will stay with them for their lifetimes. Jared, we are so proud of the inspiration you are to children and youth who can model the character you so consistently demonstrate.

(Editor’s note: This month, KidWorks is honored to recognize Angel Carrazco, Jr., and his firm, Carrazco Law, as our June Volunteer of the Month. Their support of KidWorks and the many families we serve is truly remarkable.

Established  in 2004, the firm describes itself this way: “We were founded on the idea that we are ‘all created equal’ and champion the rights of the underserved. We specialize in  civil rights, personal injury and workers’ compensation. Angel Carrazco, Jr., has been advocating for human rights for more than 20 years.”)

Mr. Carrazco, the firm’s founder and principal, grew up in the Townsend Street neighborhood in central Santa Ana, the same neighborhood where KidWorks first opened our doors in 1993 (and where we still operate a vibrant center).

Mr. Carrazco has witnessed first-hand the struggles faced by this underserved community.

He and his firm first teamed up with KidWorks in 2009, with a shared resolve to continue seeing Santa Ana achieve its untapped and full potential.

“As a result of Angel’s ties and roots with the local community, he and his law firm have been long-time friends and supporters of KidWorks,” says David Benavides, our Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer. “Over the years, they have provided invaluable support that’s ranged across all parts of our mission and strategies.”

David also thanked the firm’s Faust Minor, Communications Director, Human Resources, Operations.

“Faust is a great partner, consistently asking, ‘what else can we do to serve KidWorks and your families?’ and then making it all happen,” David says.

Mr. Carrazco’s passion for KidWorks and the central Santa Ana community is clear:

“Santa Ana will always have a special place in my heart because it shaped me into the person I have become,” he says. “Santa Ana showed me the need to pursue an education so I could help others with their legal rights.”

Mr. Carrazco adds, “KidWorks has been instrumental in shaping the minds of the community. I have seen this firsthand. Thanks to obtaining a formal education at Loyola Law School, I have been placed in a position to help those with legal and financial needs.”

The firm and its leaderships’ support over many years has included, but is not limited to:

• Internships at their law offices for high school/college students interested in law careers.  Yosely Ocampo and Jocelyn Velazquez—both KidWorks alumni—were selected for internships and are currently university students.
• Career Day 2023: Participated in a panel where students learned about various careers and also received a gift bag supplied by the firm.
• KidWorks’ state-licensed preschool. The firm’s involvement has included the Día del Niño (Children’s Day) festival in April and a Mother’s Day event.
• Trunk-or-Treat in October for our kindergarten through fifth graders. The firm  provided a photo booth for the students and helped host the overall event.
• Cars & Cocktails: One of the sponsors of this first-time event last year.
• Foundation for Success luncheon: An annual sponsor of this legacy event for many years.
• Posada (a Mexican Christmas celebration): For years they have helped sponsor this popular KidWorks’ tradition for the families we serve.
• Townsend Street summer street fair.
• Christmas Store: A years-long sponsor, providing toy donations and volunteers to wrap gifts for families who otherwise might not be able to afford holiday presents for their loved ones.
• Funding support for family outings, including trips to the Aquarium of the Pacific and Los Angeles Angels games.
• Generous financial contributions.

Our preschool in particular continues to thrive thanks to the exceptional support Mr. Carrazco and his firm provided over the years.

“The Día del Niño event in April exceeded our expectations thanks to Carrazco law,” says Idalia Galdamez, Preschool Director.  “Our youngest scholars enjoyed a petting zoo, face painting, popcorn treats, toys and more. The firm also made sure the parents got VIP treatment.”

Idalia said this Mother’s Day was also made extra-special thanks to Mr. Carrazco and the firm.

“They sponsored a photo booth, provided gift bags, served meals and helped decorate and clean up after the event,” she says.

Mr. Carrazco says it perfectly when asked what he and the firm’s hopes are for KidWorks and Santa Ana.

“After witnessing KidWorks’ remarkable growth and evolution over the past years, Carrazco Law is confident that we will soon see a major leap forward in education through their efforts,” he says. “We hope KidWorks gains national recognition for its deep commitment to the community and attracts more supporters to help advance its integration of new technologies in childhood and youth education.”

Mr. Carrazco says he and his firm look forward to “seeing a new Santa Ana.”

“It will be one shaped by healthier youth, free from gangs, drugs and social pollution,” he says. “We envision a Santa Ana built on strong values and a shared pursuit of collective well-being.”

KidWorks is deeply grateful and inspired by the leadership, support and years-long generosity Mr. Carrazco and Carrazco Law has so steadfastly provided to us and the families we serve. Their positive impact will last for generations.
